UPDATE 2008-09-28: A new record of 325 has been set by yiVGRteam: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YF6xkCCZoI8
On 12 February 2007, I clocked Returning Balls tennis training exercise in Wii Sports by achieving a score of 300 returns. Part way through this performance, I wondered whether this was a record, and set up my camera just in case.
In a revealing mistake, Wii Sports only saved my high score as 44. It understood that this was a new high score (my previous best was 170), and I kept my platinum medal. It suggests to me that it can only store a range of 0-255 (the range of an 8-bit unsigned integer, for the programmers out there) for the final score, despite tracking higher numbers while you play.
At the time of publishing (26 September 2007), I haven’t found any evidence of a better score, or anyone else who knows that you can clock that exercise after 255 points. If anyone has a better source for high scores than EliteScores, or knows of a video with a higher score, please post a comment. I can’t promise to challenge any such responses on the court, however:

Incidentally, the voice you hear was me talking during the game – it wasn’t added afterwards.
UPDATE 2007-12-05: Someone called ondra set a new record of 319 the other day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC6f2o_WWSY

The bug here is …
The bug here is internal to the game and happens before your score is saved. Also, high scores are recorded on the Wii’s internal memory and don’t depend on SD cards at all. Even a 4GB SD card (provided you can find one that works in the Wii’s non-SDHC slot) won’t help you.
no the wii …
no the wii understands ure record its the memory card ive got the 4gb sd card u can get even higher records if you by the 4gb sd card
My record is 235.

It sucks you can’t get it over 225, and it doesn’t save as a record.
you’re amazing! my …
you’re amazing! my high score is 57 and I thought I was really good!
Please do it. No …
Please do it. No where could I find a video of a good wii player. You don’t have to return a stupid amount of balls, just enough to study your technique. Please, pretty please.
That’s a good point …
That’s a good point – it’s very rare in any of these videos that you ever see the people actually playing the game.
For me, it would be partly a question of getting time to make such a video, and partly a technical question of filming myself playing and recording the end result at the same time. I may already have the equipment to do it, but I’ll have to try it to see if it works.
How many people would be interested in seeing such a video?
could you do us a …
could you do us a favour and post a video of your technique.
There are no videos of anyone actually performing the task.
Great achievement!

255 is the max for …
255 is the max for many games.
It’s essentially …
It’s essentially the same mistake: an 8-bit number was used to record the final score, even though a larger number was used during play. The valid values for an unsigned 8-bit number are zero thru 255, and 256 overflows to zero.
Yep, and if you …
Yep, and if you scored exactly 256, it would be recorded as zero points, but it would still be a new record!
So the counter …
So the counter starts over at 266? lol so for 44, added that to 256, it’s 300
